  Alex made a pitch — certainly wasn't efficient, but he made a pitch when he needed to. Those three at-bats, the bases loaded, nobody out — that was as bad as it gets. Fortunately we weathered that inning. And the way the guys responded spurred our inning: that Dalton at-bat, getting the walk, and Freddie obviously with a big hit. We should have tacked on more, but we found a way to win. There was a little confusion in the Shohei inning — Freddie going to second, then Shohei thinking that — so we kind of gave them an extra out there. But to get Shohei through six innings, and I thought the bullpen was great.

  Q: Was there any hesitation about bringing Ohtani back out for the sixth, given the pitch count and the blister? I thought the pitch count was good. I thought about it, but talking to Mark and watching Shohei — the stuff was still good — I just felt like if we could get him through another inning, it would shorten who we'd need to use for the last three. And it worked out.

  Q: He had five zeros and then one rough inning — what did you make of his stuff today? I thought the stuff was good. The sweeper wasn't as lights-out, swing-and-miss as we've seen. But he always finds a way to manage innings and make pitches when he needs to. I think he was still working through some delivery stuff with the knee.

  Q: With a couple off-days coming, given the knee and the blister, is there a way you'd think about giving him some extra rest between starts? Potentially. We do this Dermabond, and today I don't know if it came off or he didn't use it — that's what spurred the bleeding late. So right now I don't see why he won't make his start; I don't know if it's next Wednesday or Thursday. Down the road, could it happen? Potentially. But right now I think we're in a good spot, and today he came out of it well. Like a lot of our guys, when they feel good and get their rest, production follows. At the end of the day, his body feels good.

  Q: His first ten starts, he never gave up more than a run in an inning. His last two starts, he's had a couple innings where things got away. What do you see happening — is that just inevitable? In Pittsburgh he was one out away from going seven innings on one run. He gave up a hit to the lefty down the right-field line — the double — which drove in two. Today, if we execute and don't give up the base on the Mullins ball, I don't think he gives up four. And there was another Palacios ball that just had eyes. So I don't necessarily think too much of it. I mean, I don't think anyone expected him to just never give up runs.
