I think what he actually meant is, “I will make my choice the correct one (through effort)” because he didn’t have a choice to change his technique due to injury.

生まれも育ちもロサンゼルスだ。子どもの頃、親父と日本に行って、大阪や京都の地元の公園で少年野球を見たんだ。二人とも、日本の子どもたちのひたむきさにすげえ感心したよ。あれから何年も経って、世界トップの選手の多くが日本から出てくるのも、今となっちゃそんなに驚かないね
I am born and raised in Los Angeles. As a boy, I travelled to Japan, and watched youth baseball in Osaka and Kyoto at the local parks with my dad. We were both very impressed by the dedication of the young Japanese players. Now, many years later, its is not so suprising to see that many of the top players in the world come from Japan.
